As per recent reports, there has been a tragic incident in Arizona that resulted in the death of a US Navy SEAL during a free-fall parachute training exercise. Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst was the unfortunate individual who suffered fatal injuries due to the mishap, and he was immediately transported to Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, where he was later pronounced dead. The incident took place at an airfield in Marana, and the Naval Special Warfare Command has issued a statement expressing their condolences to the family of the deceased.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, and the Navy has refrained from providing any additional comments until the completion of the report. Rear Adm. Keith Davids, the leader of Naval Special Warfare Command, expressed his sorrow for the loss and conveyed his thoughts and prayers to the Ernst family. The deceased operator was serving in a Naval Special Warfare East Coast-based unit at the time of the incident.
It is worth noting that the Naval Special Warfare community regularly conducts free-falling techniques, which involve performing maneuvers at high altitudes and opening the parachute at low altitude, also known as “HALO.” It is a specialized skill that requires extensive training and preparation.
Ernst joined the Navy in August 2009 and became a part of the SEAL community three years later. During his military career, he was awarded a Silver Star, which is the third highest award for valor, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and three Combat Action Ribbons for his bravery in three different theaters of war. His commanding officer, Adm. Keith Davids, described him as an exceptional teammate who applied his skills towards some of the nation’s toughest challenges while also mentoring his colleagues selflessly.
Ernst leaves behind his wife and two young children aged 5 and 2, adding to the already overwhelming tragedy. This incident marks the fourth training-related death in the Navy in the last 14 months, as reported by Military.com. Electronics Technician 1st Class Ryan DeKorte passed away in May 2022 after injuries sustained during a helicopter landing incident near Norfolk, Virginia. In February 2022, Seaman Kyle Mullen died after completing Navy Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S), which raised concerns about inadequate medical care and discouragement of recruits from seeking help. Finally, Cmdr. Brian Bourgeois, the commanding officer of SEAL Team 8, passed away during a fast-rope training evolution in Virginia Beach in December 2021.
The series of tragic incidents highlights the immense risks involved in military training and the need to ensure the safety and well-being of service members at all times. The Navy must conduct a thorough investigation into the recent incidents and take steps to prevent such tragedies in the future. The sacrifice and dedication of the fallen service members must never be forgotten, and their families must be provided with all necessary support and assistance during these difficult times.
